Research from the Fome Zero Institute released on Monday (11) shows that 13 million Brazilians were lifted out of hunger in Brasil in 2023. In 2022, 33 million people suffered from food insecurity in the country, a figure that fell to 20 million last year. The research was commissioned by the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger (MDS) and was carried out by cross-referencing data from the Family Budget Survey and the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua), both from the IBGE.

According to the study, the reduction in the number of people in a situation of food insecurity is related to the growth in the population’s income with the fall in unemployment, gains from income transfer programs, a rise in the minimum wage above inflation and favorable economic indicators.

Task Force for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty

The fight against hunger is one of the priorities of the Brazilian presidency of the G20, which has proposed the creation of the Task Force for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. The objective is to establish a Global Alliance, with the participation of G20 member and non-member countries, to raise financial resources and technological expertise to be used in the implementation of public policies and social technologies to reduce hunger and poverty in the world.

According to the Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger and coordinator of the Task Force, Wellington Dias, Brasil has served as an example to other countries with successful initiatives, such as Bolsa Família, a cash transfer program with proven and recognized results, which can be implemented or serve as inspiration for other countries.

Task Force for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is coordinated by the ministries of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger, Foreign Affairs and Finance. The next meeting of the group will take place between March 20 and 22 in Brasilia.
